Understand your options

Find the finance approach that suits you

Whether you are choosing a new or used car, understanding how different agreements work can help you decide. Would you like to own your car, keep your options open or return it at the end of a rental agreement?

The summaries below explain three types of agreement. Available products and terms vary by vehicle; our team can confirm the options for the car you choose.

Options at the end

Solutions Personal Contract Plan (PCP)

Pay a deposit followed by monthly payments, with an agreed amount deferred until the end. Your payments depend on the car, deposit, term and agreed annual mileage.

At the end, you can:

  • Keep the car by paying the optional final payment and option to purchase fee.
  • Return it, subject to the agreement’s mileage and condition requirements.
  • Part-exchange it for another car, settling the outstanding finance. Any equity depends on its value.

Bear in mind: You do not own the car until all required payments have been made. Excess mileage and damage charges may apply if you return it.

A route to ownership

Hire Purchase (HP)

Hire Purchase spreads the cost of buying your car over an agreed term. You pay an initial deposit followed by fixed monthly instalments.

How it works:

  • Agree your deposit and repayment period.
  • Monthly instalments cover the remaining vehicle price plus interest.
  • Own the car once all payments and the option to purchase fee have been paid.
  • There is no agreed annual mileage limit.

Bear in mind: Ownership transfers only when you have completed the agreement. Consider the monthly payments and total amount payable when comparing your options.

Drive it. Return it.

Contract Hire

Contract Hire is a rental agreement. You pay to use a car for an agreed period and mileage, then return it at the end.

How it works:

  • Make an initial rental payment followed by fixed monthly rentals.
  • Agree your contract length and annual mileage.
  • Ask about including servicing, maintenance and tyres for an additional cost.
  • Return the car when your agreement ends. There is no option to purchase it under the agreement.

Bear in mind: You will not own the car. Excess mileage, damage beyond fair wear and tear, and early termination may result in additional charges.

Your questions answered

Car finance FAQs

Find answers to common questions about financing a new or used car and managing an existing agreement.

Will I be approved for finance?

Acceptance is not guaranteed. The lender will assess your application using its eligibility, affordability and credit criteria. Any offer will depend on that assessment and the terms available to you. Our team can explain the application process before you decide to proceed.

Can I get car finance even if I have bad credit?

A previous credit problem does not automatically determine the outcome of an application. Lenders consider your circumstances alongside your credit history and ability to afford the repayments. Approval is not guaranteed, and the rates and terms offered may vary. Speak to our team about the options available before making an application.

What is APR?

APR stands for Annual Percentage Rate. It expresses the cost of borrowing as a yearly percentage, taking account of interest and the charges that must be included in the calculation. It helps you compare similar credit agreements over the same term. Not every possible charge is included, so also check the total amount payable and the terms of your quotation.

What is the difference between a soft credit search and a hard credit search?

A soft search, sometimes used for an eligibility check, does not affect your credit score. A hard search is normally carried out when you make a formal finance application. It is recorded on your credit report and may affect your score.

Ask which type of search will be carried out before proceeding. An eligibility indication is not a guarantee that a full application will be accepted.

What if I am struggling to pay?

Contact your finance provider as soon as possible to explain your circumstances and discuss the support available. The options will depend on your situation and agreement.

If your agreement is with Volkswagen Financial Services, visit its financial help page . If you use another provider, contact that lender using the details on your agreement.

Who can I talk to if I need advice?

MoneyHelper offers free, impartial money guidance. Organisations such as StepChange, National Debtline and Citizens Advice can help with debt and money concerns. You can find their details in our help and support section .

Our Preston and Colne teams can also explain the finance products we offer and help you understand your quotation. We do not provide independent financial advice.

Can I get finance on a used car?

Finance may be available on eligible used vehicles as well as new cars. Available products and terms can depend on the vehicle’s age, mileage and price, the lender’s criteria and your circumstances. Our team can confirm the options for the car you choose.

What affects my monthly payments?

Factors can include the vehicle price, your deposit or initial rental, agreement length, interest and fees, and any final payment. Annual mileage also affects products such as PCP and Contract Hire. Compare the total amount payable as well as the monthly payment when considering a quotation.

Can I use my current car towards a deposit?

You may be able to use the value of a part-exchange towards your next car. If it has outstanding finance, this must be settled. Any amount remaining after settlement may be available towards your deposit. If the settlement is higher than the car’s value, there is a shortfall to address. Our team can explain the figures before you decide.

Can I settle my finance agreement early?

For agreements such as PCP and Hire Purchase, ask your lender for an early settlement figure. This confirms the amount required to clear the finance and any applicable charges. Ending Contract Hire early is different from settling a purchase agreement and may involve an early termination charge. Contact your provider for the options under your particular agreement.

Do mileage limits apply?

PCP and Contract Hire agreements include an agreed mileage allowance. Excess mileage charges may apply when you return the vehicle, so choose an allowance that reflects your expected driving. Standard Hire Purchase does not have an agreed annual mileage limit. Check your quotation and agreement for the terms that apply.

How do I manage my existing finance agreement?

If your agreement is with Škoda Financial Services, visit the Škoda Finance portal to access the online services available for your agreement. If you use another lender, contact that provider directly using the details on your agreement.
